Tifanta World “Night Spot”
A little mock-up of something I’ve been toying with recently. Mostly, it’s just a production experiment, trying to get the hang of EQ’ing. I was EQ’ing all wrong before, trying to strip away every single inessential or problematic frequency in order to isolate sounds. When you do that, the result is clean, but empty-feeling. You have to allow the different tracks to interact with one another, without interfering in an unpleasant way. Also, I found the Apple EQ shelf plug-ins, which are super handy. The first thing I do to a track is drop in a high-shelf EQ at about 40hz and a low-shelf EQ at about 11khz, cutting off the extreme low and high ends. Those frequencies, when audible, usually just register as distracting noise to human ears.
Anyway, it’s nice to have a better idea of what I’m actually doing when I do it, vis a vis music production. With “1989,” I think I somehow stumbled upon a decent level or production quality, but I was never quite sure how to replicate it. A big part of music production is developing a general workflow that you can go back to time and again, so you don’t end up in frustrating situations that stifle creativity.
